Samuel Kay was born in Rome, Italy, to an American father and an Italian mother. He started his training in 2010 when he was admitted with a full scholarship to the acting program of the National Academy of Dramatic Arts “Silvio D’Amico” in Italy, as the youngest student in the entire school. During his time there, he studied with masters of the stage and award-winning theater directors such as Antonio Latella, Massimiliano Civica, Christian Burgess(Guildhall) and Fabrizio Gifuni. There he perfected contact improvisation, Commedia dell’Arte, dance, mask work, stage combat, as well as many other acting approaches and styles. He graduated from the conservatory with “Dark Days”, a production written by the actors and directed by the highly regarded Gabriele Lavia, which sold out at the prestigious Teatro Argentina in Rome. In 2013, while still enrolled in the Academy, Samuel co-wrote, directed and produced “Today is the 27th of Adar 5773,” a theater play featured at the “Venice Open Stage,” the theater festival of “La Biennale” in Venice, which received ample press coverage and praise. He also collaborated with accomplished screenwriter Alessandro Sermoneta on the movie “Shimessalinu.” In 2014 Samuel was admitted to the MFA Acting program at UCLA. Moving the to US was the stepping stone Samuel needed not only to perfect his acting skills, but also to experiment further with writing and directing. In the summer of 2015 he was admitted with a full scholarship to the prestigious British Drama Academy at Oxford University (joint program with Yale School of Drama), where he studied with John Barton, Julian Glover, Fiona Shaw, Peter Francis James, Lucian Msamati, Mick Barnfather(Complicitè) and many other artists and professors from RADA, Guildhall, Yale and Juilliard. Over the last few years Samuel has been performing both on stage and for the camera. Among the most relevant theater performances he was directed by Michael Hackett in "Helen" by Euripides; J. Ed Araiza in "Three Sisters" by A. Chekhov; Ellen Laurent (SITI Company) in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by W. Shakespeare and was part of the UCLA production “Life on Praça Roosevelt” by Dea Loher, directed by Dutch director Marike Splint. In front of the camera, Samuel was part of the Distant Vision Project directed by Francis Ford Coppola in July, 2016. He has also been part of short movies such as “Death,” a James Franco production, and “Houdini,” a short film directed by Frank Pfeifer. During his three years at UCLA, Samuel Kay has been awarded the Laura Pels Fellowship in Acting and the TFT Acting Fellowship.
