Phoebe B.
Private tutor in Los Angeles, CA
Education
I attended Bennington College and graduated in 2015 with a BA. My undergraduate major was literature, with an additional focus on creative writing, and my grade point average was 3.62.
Experience
I began providing peer feedback as a teacher's assistant in the English classroom during my junior year of high school, and continued to do so until graduation. After leaving for college, I returned periodically to assist in the English classroom, moving from only providing written edits and feedback to tutoring students and creating lesson plans and providing assistance in with AP English. Once I had graduated, I taught a weekly creative writing workshop at an alternative high school. I led group discussions, assigned reading material and story prompts, in addition to providing written and verbal feedback on student work. As a supplement to the workshop I met with the students individually and discussed their goals and challenges. The following school year (Fall 2016), I received a grant to become an Artist in Residence and teach a daily class to a larger group of students, covering much of the same territory but in greater depth. Once again I designed the class myself and adapted my lesson plans and assignments to fit student needs. My pertinent test scores include a 5 on the AP English exam in my junior year of high school, a 99th percentile PSAT Critical Reading Score, an 800 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT, and 167 on the Verbal Reasoning portion of the GRE.

Hobbies
In addition to teaching and tutoring, I spend much of my time either reading or writing. I believe in a creative, compassionate, and flexible approach to teaching, and think that tutoring can be crucial to personalizing the learning process and helping students thrive. My teaching and tutoring experiences have made me aware of the importance of understanding a student's learning style and responding to their needs.
