Daniel S.

Private tutor in Los Angeles, CA

Education

Bachelor of the Arts in Music with honors at Yale University, with a focus in music cognition and composition.

Experience

Over the past five years I have instructed students both privately and in classroom settings on reading, writing, and several styles of music theory and performance. I have privately tutored learning disabled kids of all ages, working every day with students as they progressed from being unable to write their own names to reading short novels. This experience taught me how to work well with students of differing ages, personalities, and learning styles; and impressed upon me the importance of patience and creativity in my teaching approach. I have also taught musical theory and performance to teenagers and adults, an experience that taught me that a rigorous and technically concise curriculum is required for teaching something even as spontaneous as music. Over my time at Yale, I took numerous courses in linguistics, neural and cognitive science, music, English, and quantitative reasoning. Through my coursework I gained extensive knowledge about how people learn and integrate new information into existing mental frameworks. This knowledge, combined with my experience teaching and music directing, has led me to the conclusion that a good teacher is both technically thorough yet intuitively flexible. Through these experiences I have also developed a love for teaching. Cultivating a personal relationship with students and watching them and myself grow over time is an incredibly rewarding process, no matter what it is we are studying. I have also had extensive experience as a leader and music director. I am currently music directing a show on Off Broadway, and I spent my fourth year at Yale leading the Yale Whiffenpoofs on a two hundred performance tour across twenty-six countries. I work part-time as a published songwriter, and I can be found most evenings pounding out melodies and lyrics at a piano.
