Private tutor in Los Angeles, CA

Education

Recently, I completed a Ph.D. in physics at UCLA, where I am currently continuing to conduct research as a postdoc. I also hold an M.S. in physics from UCLA (3.79 GPA) and a B.A. in physics from CU Boulder (4.00 GPA). For most of my life, I have had a deep interest in physics. Through years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have discovered that being able to convey my understanding to others is incredibly rewarding. Currently, I am seeking motivated students who want to improve their abilities in physics and math. I specialize in teaching all levels of physics up to and including introductory college-level mechanics and electricity & magnetism (calculus-based or algebra-based). I also tutor algebra (pre-algebra, algebra I, algebra II) and trigonometry.

Experience

I first started tutoring throughout high school and college, primarily helping friends and family with physics, math, and computer programming. After receiving my Bachelor’s degree in physics from CU Boulder, I then spent a full year as a private professional tutor, primarily teaching introductory-level college physics (including calculus-based mechanics and electricity & magnetism) to undergraduates. Next, I attended graduate school at UCLA, where I instructed calculus-based and algebra-based physics classes as a TA for over a year. During this time, students felt very comfortable seeking my help. As a result, my office hours were always full and I even received an Outstanding TA Award based on excellent student reviews. My tutoring style is flexible and tailored to your current needs. I am comfortable presenting concepts in lecture format, working sample or homework problems, or reviewing for upcoming tests. When working through problems, I will often ask you to articulate your reasoning so that I can gauge your understanding and correct any misconceptions. Overall, my emphasis is on teaching underlying concepts and developing problem-solving strategies rather than simply memorizing equations. In my experience, one of the main obstacles to learning physics and math in a standard classroom setting is that struggling students just don’t have the time (or feel too intimidated) to get all the clarifications that they need. Even when students do manage to ask their teacher or professor a question during a lecture, they typically don’t feel comfortable asking for additional clarifications if the explanation doesn’t completely make sense to them. When I tutor, I ensure that you feel comfortable asking for as many explanations as you need, and that no amount of repetitive questioning will cause me to lose my patience. My goal is to see you completely grasp the concept, even if that means meticulously reworking each step of the same problem multiple times. I also recognize that certain ideas in physics and math have the strange property of seeming “obvious” to those that have been exposed to them while completely mystifying anyone seeing them for the very first time. If I see you struggling to grasp such an idea, I attempt to put myself in your position by recalling the difficulties that I experienced myself when I was first learning that same concept. This usually helps me pinpoint and then eliminate the source of the misunderstanding.

Hobbies

In my free time, I DJ and produce music, play guitar, practice meditation, and work on planning my next long trip around the world. I also enjoy learning philosophy and thinking deeply about the most challenging existential questions that we are faced with, such as the nature of consciousness.
