Experience

I recently worked as a writing coach at the School for the Visual Arts and Humanities (SVAH). I loved helping the seniors with their college essays and am proud of the great progress that they made during our time together. Part of the secret of our success was connecting as people. We got to know each other and established a comfortable space for sharing personal narratives. We talked through writing-related traumas and fears, provided reassurance, and set goals. I always gave productive feedback, sometimes delivering the same note week after week. I showed the students where they could make adjustments and suggested different approaches. In the end, all of the students revised their work in meaningful ways. They got it. They understood, for example, which information to share with various audiences and why; they recognized how simple, clear sentences were more effective than run-ons with awkward word choices. The outcome was so much more than a set of strong college essays. I believe that all of the students walked away with stronger writing skills and greater self-efficacy in terms of writing. These are assets that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Personally, I also walked away transformed. Working at SVAH was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and has inspired me to make a career change. I would like to make a living as a writing coach, leveraging my skills and talents to help people tell their own stories and grow as readers and writers.

I'm a movie lover and TV aficionado, watching at least 100 films per year and following several series across broadcast, cable, and Netflix. Sports are also a huge part of my life. My wife has called my knowledge of sports stats and personnel "encyclopedic," and it encompasses college and professional baseball, football, hockey, and basketball. Music is also important to me. I grew up on alternative and classic rock, and noodle around on my guitar every so often.
