Christopher B.
Private tutor in Los Angeles, CA
Education
I have received both an M.Phil. (2015) and M.A. (2014) in anthropology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and I expect to receive my PhD in the spring of 2017. Additionally, I received a Certificate in Culture & Media (awarded by the departments of anthropology and cinema studies) from NYU in 2013. I graduated magna cum laude from UC Berkeley with a degree in anthropology, where I was awarded high honors in both general scholarship and in my major (3.97 GPA).
Experience
I decided to pursue my PhD because I am passionate about research, but the primary reason I was drawn to academia is that I love teaching! The educational process is fascinating - I believe the first step to being a good tutor and mentor is helping students understand the applicability of what they're studying. Once we have a grasp of why the material matters, we can dig into the details of the material to produce better results and performance. I have taught anthropology for three years at the university level in New York City, so I have experience working with students from various backgrounds, and who have very different skill sets. In addition to my own courses, I have been a TA for more senior faculty members, so I have a good grasp of what professors are looking for in successful writing and critical thinking assignments. Additionally, I received a grant from the French Ministry of Education, where I taught English grammar and composition to non-native English speakers in France. I speak French, and have also tutored English speakers who are working to learn French. While I have advanced degrees in anthropology, I enjoy tutoring students on general writing and critical thinking assignments. I am also happy to coach students through the application process to college, graduate school, or scholarships.

Hobbies
My path to academia was an unusual one! I began my life training as a professional ballet dancer and after several successful years dancing in the US and abroad, I retired to pursue other interests (namely college!). After graduating, I worked in education, public health, and film production before I decided to start graduate work in anthropology where I tied all of these interests together. I enjoy helping my students meet their goals - whether they're hoping to ace an exam, write an amazing college admissions essay, or master course content.
