I have tutored since my freshman year of high school which, to date, means that I have been tutoring for approximately 9 years now! I love tutoring because I think that I am personally a kid at heart and I always enjoy connecting with the students that I teach and teach them in a way that they can enjoy my presence and, thus, enjoy learning with me. My philosophy/understanding is that nobody wants to learn from someone that they cannot connect with or dislike. I can think back just even now to the teachers that I couldn't stand in school and can honestly say that I learned less in their classes simply because I didn't WANT to learn from them. The teachers that stuck with me the most were often the classes that I performed the best in. I like tutoring because, aside from just distracting me from a typical 9-5 fulltime job in finance, it is just nice to connect with someone younger than me and help someone learn something. Between all of the students I have tutored, I have found most often that they are ABLE to learn the materials - it is not a mental capability that stops them from understanding the material, but rather the methodology or explanation that they are not clear on. I want to act as that bridge and level with them in order to break down to them the subject that they are having a hard time with. Finally, I am not simply a tutor, but I like to think of myself as a third party mentor. If my student has a question, I can answer that over text or phone call; similarly, if I need to go over 5-10 minutes to finish clarifying or teaching a new concept, I don't mind doing so without charging extra. While I, of course, do get monetary compensation out of this, I am almost as equally interested in tutoring to GET somewhere with my student and not just sit down for an hour and get paid.
