Experience
In middle school and high school tutors helped me succeed in math. As a result, I am a tutor because I want to give my students the same confidence that my tutors gave me. I can succeed where teachers fail. I am able to provide my students with the skills they need to be successful in school. I do this by assessing each of my student’s individual learning style and incorporating their strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses. My bachelor’s degree is in Literature and my graduate degree is in Art History. I am qualified to teach writing, grammar, vocabulary, reading, art history, and art theory. During my undergraduate time at Bard College I worked for the school's tutoring program where I tutored other college students in writing. After graduation I tutored high school students for many years in both reading and writing. Following my Master's degree I began working with middle school students in museums where I lead workshops and activities that centered around the art on view and it's social and historical context. All of these experiences reinforced my love of teaching and tutoring outside the classroom. My expertise is in the areas of reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing. I help my students break apart the text to analyze what they are reading on a more critical level. I show them how to use text evidence and textual clues to ascertain the deeper meanings in the text. Likewise, I show them how both grammar and vocabulary are used to enhance the author’s purpose. In writing, I teach my students how to use graphic organizers to plan their essay before they write. I also show them how to elaborate their ideas using supporting details. In addition, while I'm helping my students write a paper, I teach them how to deconstruct sentences and paragraphs so they can see how the paper is broken down. This helps them to understand what they need to do to revise and edit their work. After my first tutoring session, if a parent or student is not pleased he or she will not be billed for that session. I am able to tutor from my apartment, which has a large table to work on and is very quiet, or I can travel to the student's home. My schedule is very flexible, but I do have a two-hour minimum cancellation policy before the session. I also offer make up classes. I hope to hear from you soon and I can't wait to help you succeed in school!
