Experience

I have my B.A in Communications and Feminist Theory. I have worked as an English educator for over 5 years with high school students. The majority of my students, roughly 47%, were English Second Language learners each had their own level of proficiency. I would facilitate a proficiency test to identify their skill level, once identified I made an individual education plan geared towards the student's particular needs. For student's who tested within the same level I would group them together for interactive group lessons that involved dialogue. I understand that relatively English is one of the hardest languages due to the "exceptions to the rules" such as, overlook and oversee have two different meanings yet, both words contain the same stem and similar suffix meanings yet the difference in over- look and over -see changes the whole meaning albeit, both see and look mean the same thing. I am very patient in teaching these contradictions and intigrate visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning styles to help students understand the concept. I hope I am considered for this position as I am excited to teach again! I have worked as an educator, mentor, counselor, tutor, and social political activist for over 3 years at Moving Forward Education. Throughout my years I have worked with a number of Oakland and San Francisco schools however, Cal Safe an Alternative High School for teen mothers has made a special impression on me. Many of the students dealt with broken family issues, child abuse, sexual abuse etc. yet, all demonstrated strength by pursuing their high school diploma. My objective was to help build community, self-esteem, improve their academic performance, and prepare them with life skills. By the end of the program I co-facilitated three community-building (unity as women, self-love, forgiveness) sessions, led resume building courses, and successfully assisted over 80% of students who attended the class, acquire jobs and interviews. One of my favorite quotes I share with students is, “Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal.” –Elbert Hubbard
