Education

MFA from University of Idaho in Creative Writing. BA from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in English/Creative Writing with a minor in French.

Experience

I've worked as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Idaho for the past three years where I taught courses in Composition, Writing & Rhetoric, Beginning Poetry, and Personal & Exploratory Writing. I've worked in both multimedia and online classrooms, worked with students with disabilities, and have spent many hours one-on-one with students and their writing. I am deeply committed to helping students find voice and purpose in their writing, no matter what the topic or style. One of my processes for helping students find voice is to approach their writing with an inquiring stance, which in turn challenges them to move beyond initial ideas and arguments to get to a more developed and refined meaning of their text. A few accomplishments: In 2009, my panel was nominated to attend the 61st Annual Convention of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). In 2010 I was the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) Intro Journals Project representative for University of Idaho. In 2011 I was invited to teach high-school level workshops for the Annual Hemingway Festival in Moscow, Idaho.

Hobbies

In addition to being a teacher, I am co-founder and co-editor in chief of the independent literary and arts journal Carbon Copy Magazine, which places me in contact with writing and editing each day. I was a competitive swimmer for 17 years, during which I earned a scholarship to swim for SIUC, a Division I university. I was a Saluki Scholar Athlete all four years, as well as team captain my senior year. I've also taught swim lessons and have worked at swim camps. I currently swim for a master's swim team in Los Angeles. I'm originally from North Idaho, which has gifted me a love of the outdoors. I'm an avid hiker, camper, and waterfall scouter.
