Shahira B.

Private tutor in Los Angeles, CA

Education

I hold a Bachelor in Microbiology/Chemistry ("Ain Shams" University, Cairo) , a Master degree in Molecular Biology/Genetics ("Biozentrum", Basel, Switzerland) and a Master in Education (UMASS Boston & UMASS Lowell, MA). I am also a certified facilitator and docent at the Museum of Tolerance; where I volunteer as tour guide of the museum's main exhibits. I am fluent in Arabic, German and English; with conversational knowledge of French.

Experience

I am a biology educator with 18 years of teaching experience. I taught Advanced Placement Biology for 8 years; then transitioned to college teaching while living in MA. I held a tenure track position as Associate Professor of Biology and Coordinator of the Biotechnology Program at Bunker Hill Community College for 4 years. Since my move to California in 2009, I have been teaching part time. I taught Genetics lecture/lab courses at California State University, LA (2015). Prior to that, I taught molecular/cellular biology; non- majors’ biology; environmental/organismal biology and human genetics at College of the Canyons (2011– 14), Mount San Antonio and Citrus Colleges (2010–11). In addition to teaching, I designed and developed the curriculum for a 2 year Associate degree in Biological Sciences with a biotechnology option for employment and a transfer option. I used a STEM grant to establish articulation agreements with the entire UMass system, which allowed students to transfer with junior status in biology. In terms of leadership in education, I designed and presented numerous professional development workshops for educators in biotechnology and best practices. I am proficient a wide range of lab techniques and their classroom applications (cell biology; microscopy; microbiology; molecular biology). I utilize computer technology for instruction, assessment and student communications. This includes Blackboard, Moodle, PowerPoint, biology/biotechnology multimedia, on line quizzes and test generators. I have been working with a multicultural and very diverse student body since 1997, which afforded me a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of college students. I am very passionate about teaching and would like to continue on a tutoring basis, as I pursue my new goals as educational consultant. I would also enjoy tutoring German, since I am fluent and have enjoyed tutoring German in 1997.
