Experience

My specialist subjects are English, Elocution and Voice Coaching, Drama & Theatre Studies, History. I also teach Music, Religious Studies and Art. I have worked with children and adult learners in a number of different situations, from leading workshops, one on one tuition, ushering and entertaining. I am enthusiastic about the many different ways that there are to learn and teach. I feel each individual student needs someone to work with them creatively, responding to their needs and encouraging an engaging environment. I learned a lot from leading script-writing workshops with young carers and finding different routes into teaching, working with a creative learning program trained me to be able to work with a range of students. My background in Music, Art and History feeds into a fully rounded academic and creative/practical overview. Having an English Literature degree and a training from the Oxford School of Drama I am fully open to finding ways to spark interest in creative subjects and see how they link into one and other, in a friendly manner and with passion for the subjects. Selection of clients: Kate was at boarding school most of the year so we held a mixture of Easter and half term revision sessions and Skype tutorials. We worked on Pride and Prejudice, A View From the Bridge and Poetry alongside English Language. Kate had an almost too in depth working with prose and we worked on focusing on the question at hand and finding the key points and the best was to examine language. She achieved A*'s in her GCSE's Hayat is preparing to apply for a foundation English Literature degree at Oxford University, I have created a syllabus for her that covers Shakespeare, Victorian Literature, modern prose and poetry. Focusing currently on Othello, Jane Eyre and the Wide Sargasso Sea Hayat is developing both analytical skills and a sense of literary theory Teresa has been working on her dissertation on female suffering in Renaissance writing for a BA in English Literature, I have been assisting her with Shakespeare expertise and looking at how to engage with the critical discourse around her debate. Her planning and structuring needed work alongside a wealth of research and critical reading. I introduced her to a range of critical texts and enabled her to further her own research to create a discourse of her own Francesca (GCSE and out of school tuition) tuition in English Literature (Macbeth, Of Mice and Men), English Language and History (Post 1920’s USA, 1900-1918 British History). Francesca had been absent from school for half a year due to illness. We got her back on track to receive B-A’s in both History and English. 9 year old Onyinye, Ugo and Nneka were visiting London over the summer from their American School in Nigeria, their mother hoped to get them up to speed on the British syllabus and fill in any gaps that were missing in their English literature and language study as part of an intensive residential. We focused on a scheme of work around Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, mainly as a means to engage their imagination and expand their vocabulary. Their understanding of grammar and the rules of language etc was fantastic but they needed more creative stimulus. We worked on imaginary letter writing, descriptive writing about Brazil, using imagery and sensory language and I used more creative techniques like getting the girls to do soundscapes together and visits to the British Museum. They left with a greater capacity for vivid description and writing and an engagement with analysing the effects of writing and how to process them. they should be ready to apply for British schools over the next couple of years.
