Education

M.A. University of Pennsylvania - Communications (3.8 GPA) -- At the Annenberg School for Communication I learned to conduct research and produce graduate-level writing in the Social Science and Human Development traditions. My focus was on Digital Youth Culture and Hip-Hop Culture. I also took numerous courses at UPenn's Graduate School of Education, where I studied Psychological and Developmental theories pertinent to Adolescent Development and Racial Identity Development. B.A. Tufts University - American Studies (3.87 GPA) -- My undergraduate focus was on American Literature and Critical Cultural Theory. I graduated with honors and was the recipient of the Ted Shapiro Award for American Studies and the Ted Shapiro Award for Outstanding Senior Thesis. My thesis explored the emergent Young Adult literary genre and the portrayal of American adolescents during the late 20th century.

Experience

Through volunteer and paid work I have tutored elementary through high school students in reading comprehension, writing, and algebra. As a 2006 Amigos de las Americas volunteer I spent 8 weeks in a rural town in the Dominican Republic where I used my Spanish language skills to plan and facilitate educational day camps for local youth. In 2007 I was an in-class volunteer for 4th graders at the UChicago Laboratory Schools. In 2009 I worked as a tutor and community organizer for The Black Star Project, a Chicago-based non-profit organization that develops educational initiatives nationwide in addition to hosting tutoring sessions for local youth. In 2014 I was the graduate Teaching Fellow for Dr. Amy Jordan's Children & Media course at the University of Pennsylvania. My role included closely monitoring students' progress, assisting students' comprehension of the class material during my office hours, grading exams and essays, as well as giving a lecture on mass media and adolescent identity development. I love putting all of my skills and personality into teaching. I'm always ready to be patient and encouraging with students. Providing young people with the academic support they need, and setting an example for an eager approach to learning, is deeply fulfilling to me. SAT score: 2150 ACT score: 32

Hobbies

MUSIC: I love music! My first concert as a teen was the Arcade Fire, but I'd been a fan of everything from Caribbean soca to Leonard Cohen since childhood. Later I became passionate about radio; as a senior in high school I volunteered at the UChicago radio station WHPK and went on to become the Music Director of my college radio station WMFO. ART: My family began taking me to art museums and sculpture gardens when I was very young. Since then I have also been a huge fan of illustrated children's books, comics and graphic novels, and animated films. SPORTS: In high school I was a varsity swimmer and tennis player. I also have a lifelong love of baseball. At Tufts University I played Ultimate Frisbee, which is seen as a very serious sport in Massachusetts. Another activity I enjoy is being in the wilderness. While growing up in the Midwest, I took many canoe trips with friends and family into Northern Minnesota and Canada.
