Experience

Originally from Mexico, I received my BA in History at Columbia University, and graduated from one of Asia's best private schools, Woodstock School, in India. I specialize in high school and college admissions, SAT and ACT prep, as well as reading, writing, Spanish, English, social sciences, history, and economics of all levels, elementary through college. I have worked extensively with high-school age students on SAT and ACT prep, as well as every stage of the college process. I am a fun and engaging tutor who works well with children as well as teenagers and adults of all ages. I have worked with students of all levels and ages over the past six years, from elementary school through the Master's and post-graduate level. I practice a dynamic teaching method based based on organizational thinking with proven results. My pedagogy focuses on developing a methodology, practicing a lot, and having fun! Over the past six years, my students have gotten into schools such as NYU, the University of Michigan, Stanford, Columbia University, Yale, Oberlin College, and Sarah Lawrence College. I have counseled students extensively on the college application process. I come form a background of workshop facilitation, so I run my lessons in a way that is engaging with the student and draws on their own skills and knowledge. Along with college admissions and test-prep, I also focus on students with Specialized/ Individualized Education Plans, as well as students with diagnosed disabilities such as ADHD/ADD. I also have experience as an ESL/ELL tutor with high school students. I am also fluent in Spanish, and have tutored both students learning Spanish as well as non-native English speakers learning English. I am also a semi-professional photographer, trained at Columbia's School of the Arts, in both digital and film photography. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: In English, writing, and reading I employ a philosophy of organization, where I've developed formulaic frameworks for essay writing, reading, and test preparation. I try to get my students in all of the subject areas to look at the larger picture, so that they can overcome small details more easily. I have very flexible hours and cancellation policies and am based in Downtown Los Angeles, although I can meet locally at locations that are more convenient to my students.
