ExperienceI have tutored for more than 6 years. Throughout my classroom experiences, I learned that children have different learning styles. My background in political science helps me to acknowledge these different learning styles and adapt my teaching in order to promote learning. Through working with different students, I have helped them succeed by creating a positive environment that fosters learning. By emphasizing organization and establishing structured routines, I am able to help students grow and achieve their goals. Before becoming an a graduate student, I worked as a tutor helping students with English, math and standardized test prep primarily in a one-on-one setting. Now, I get to use my skills to empower students more comprehensively, helping them to better organize their study area and their time, to find the study methods that work best and to specifically deal with executive function challenges such as focus/attention in a fun and creative way. My extensive experience with ESL students helps me understand the challenges facing students with executive function challenges or general study/organizational issues.
I have been tutoring children, adolescents and college students for the past several years, and more recently have specialized in tutoring children who are ESL students. I currently work at UC Irvine and am part of a multisite study that explores the effects of stress. My goal is to make each lesson engaging by using stories, games, pictures and music while teaching students. I believe strongly in the importance of helping bright students with learning and behavioral differences gain confidence and improve their overall school performance. I love giving students the tools they need to solve problems. Some of my favorite moments in teaching have come when a student finally figures out how to solve a tricky algebra problem, or improves an essay through careful revising. Watching a student make progress is deeply rewarding.
Sometimes, solving students learning difficulty with study skills can be a simple matter of changing one thing (making sure the student has a clean backpack; ensuring that the student has a daily planner with which to track assignments). Other times, it can be the interaction of several factors. I work closely with the student and parents to ensure that the learning difficulty is properly diagnosed and treated so the student can take full advantage of everything school has to offer.
HobbiesDuring my free time, I enjoy reading and cooking. My favorite type of food to cook is Italian food. Also, I enjoy hiking and biking around the city. I have a passion for traveling and exploring. I am always ready for an adventure. Not only have I traveled extensively around the United States, but I have had the opportunity to experience many other countries as well.
