I am currently a senior at UCLA, studying psychology and philosophy. (I will be done with my major, minor, and school requirements after Winter quarter--I just have a few more electives to take--so I am basically a graduate.) I have been a tutor since my freshman year of high school, when I began tutoring a sophomore in Algebra 2. Since then, I have been a tutor for thirteen students, from 6th graders to seniors in high school, in at least ten different subjects. I also tutored for an after-school program in high school (as community service) for one year, which was a very rewarding experience. My strengths are in math and writing, but I am strong in all subjects and have a great amount of knowledge as a result of the many honors and advanced placement classes I took in high school. My college classes have also strengthened my math and writing skills, encouraged me to think critically in every area of life, and helped me become more well-rounded in my education.

I absolutely love working with pre-teens and teens and find tutoring very rewarding. I feel that I have truly helped all my students become more motivated, focused, skilled, and proud of their work--their improvements are reflected in their grades and proud parents. I know that all it takes for some students to succeed is that extra "push" and encouragement that tutoring provides. Not only do I understand the importance of encouragement and a positive attitude, but I know how important it is to acquire effective study skills and good habits. With all my years of experience, I have gained the knowledge of what works well for which students. I know how to cater to an individual's strengths while working to improve their weaknesses.

Recognition: Dean's Honors List (for 7 quarters at UCLA); Outstanding Achievement (Golden Key Internationl Honor Society, 2006-08); Scholarship, Leadership, and Service (National Society of Collegiate Scholars 2006-08); valedictorian of Woodside High School 2005

Hobbies:

I am very active and creative, and love to participate in community service. I played soccer for about 8yrs, danced for 6-7yrs (in studios, on my high school dance team, in musical performances), and have been a part of philanthropic groups for 6yrs.

Hourly Rate:
$30.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays in the afternoon
Friday at any time
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
90024 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

Los Angeles Tutor Profile: Mechanical Engineering major at UC Los Angeles

Tutor Profile
Grad student at UC Los Angeles with a 3.50 GPA
Majoring in Mechanical Engineering

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects
Algebra, Calculus, SAT Math, Physics, and Geometry

Experience:

Hi,
I started off as a bad student in high school and turned out being able to go to UCLA for a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. My philosophy is that everyone learns in different ways, and that you should devote as much time to finding what makes you learn and what time management schedule works for you (which is the most important skill in college) as time spent actually studying. Going to the library does not work for everyone, nor does just doing the assigned homework. What I could help with is actually understanding the basic concepts and building up from there.

I also competed in rowing (a D1 sport) at varsity level for three years while studying engineering, which gave me skills in time management- I understand how difficult it is to make time for school and how to stay motivated. I can help the student learn how to find and tackle the most important tasks first.

I want to be a tutor because I really enjoy helping other students understand class material, and to teach them the secrets (which aren't really secrets at all) to doing well.

I haven't tutored since high school, but have helped many of my classmates understand the key concepts behind the math, engineering, and physics.

Hobbies:

Anything outdoors- I mountain bike, row, sail, run, and many other activities. I really like to travel and studied abroad in England for a year on a study abroad program. School related- I am interested in cars, planes, and really anything that moves f

Hourly Rate:
$25.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays after 7PM
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
90024 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

I endeavor to assess these styles - auditory, visual, kinesthetic - and create lessons that are tailored to students' individual needs. With this approach, I believe I can contribute to a student's overall learning "toolbox" and provide a basis that they can use in future endeavors.
I am also proficient in many forms of writing in English and foreign language, including academic essay, creative essay, conference papers and writing for grant proposals. I have recently published academic and creative essays in local journals affiliated with the UCLA Dept. of Hispanic Languages and have won prestigious awards each year of graduate study.
I look forward to meeting new students and conributing to their academic success.

My name is Erica and I am a sophomore at USC. This is my first year here, I transferred from Claremont McKenna College, and I am loving it!
My favorite subjects have always been math and writing, though I am a business major (with a mathematical finance minor). From the 8th grade until recently, I wanted to be a math teacher! I love working with kids (but I don't want to be a teacher anymore) and have tutored all of my younger cousins and some classmates.
When I took the SAT in 2005 and 2006, my math score was 770, writing 720, and reading 700. I have received "A" grades in all of my college level math classes as well as throughout high school.
Writing has mostly been a hobby for me, but I get many compliments on writing pieces all the time. I excel most at creative writing–I was voted to speak at my high school commencement out of 30 other students by fellow peers and faculty. I enjoy fixing other people's grammar :)

Hobbies:

I am a dork at heart, which is why I love math and writing. I would describe myself as enthusiastic, up beat, and encouraging. I play the viola and love to sing, I play a lot of playing cards and my favorite sport (?) is bowling. I tell dumb jokes and I d

Hourly Rate:
$20.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekends after 6PM
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
90007 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

So, even after 2 years of experience in the IT industry (Application Developer, IBM), the urge for higher studies and specialization has brought me here to USC to pursue my MS degree. My strengths being in math and science, I have listed subjects related to these in my application.
I have done tutoring for computer basics for underprivileged children when I was working at IBM, in India, as a part of a social service program.
I have great respect for the teaching profession and I think of teaching as an art which requires a lot of patience. The teacher should have such an enthusiasm which will flow to her students, and facilitate the learning experience.
My GRE score was 1370/1600, with 790/800 in the Math section and 580/800 in the Verbal section. Currently I am doing my masters in computer science at USC, and I will be completing my first semester this December.

Hobbies:

I love sports like badminton, table tennis and swimming. I also like outdoor activities like trekking and camping, and like travelling and visiting different places. I enjoy reading a variety of novels of fiction ranging from mystery and thrillers, to one

Hourly Rate:
$20.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
90007 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor
